What Is a Graphic Design Artworker?

What is an artworker?

I have often been asked this question by graduate graphic designers looking to break into the industry. It is not an unreasonable question as its not really something you can study or certify for so a definition is hard to find.

You will see job ads for these positions in some of the more specialised design publications. Artworker, Creative Artworker, Layout Artist, Mac Operator etc…

The role came about before the introduction on apple macs when all typesetting was done manually. The designers took on a more of an art directing role and left the typesetters to bring their scamps to life. Nowadays with the mac ubiquitous in every studio these days, the designer can now get more hands on. Indeed in small agencies they may be asked to take on the artworking role too but in larger setups the separation is still maintained.

Digital Graphic Art

Digital graphic art is all around us – in magazines, on television and the Internet, even cell phone apps. These days, creative graphic design is also within reach for those of us with really great graphic design ideas but a lack of natural talent. Where as before, hand drawn or painted art that hung on walls or was printed on t-shirts was the only game in town. Today that experience can be shared by the digital graphic artist as well.

And how did we ever live without computer graphic design software? From make-your-own business cards to elaborate fantasy pieces, these programs themselves are works of art. For those of use who can’t freehand draw to save our lives, graphic design software allows our abilities to join our imaginations. Make a mistake? No problem, just undo a few times and try again.

Even the software programs that allow us access to this creativity are more readily available and diverse in choices these days. While the granddaddy of them all keeps getting bigger and better, smaller scale and less expensive – even free – programs are also available. This is great news for those who don’t have the money, learning curve patience or need for full-scale digital graphic art editing software.

How a Graphic Artist Can Contribute to an Open Source Project

Usually when people think about contributing to open source projects, their first thought is about programmers and coders who work together to develop a piece of software. If you are not a programmer, you probably feel like there is very little that you can do to contribute to the project. The reality is that there are many different tasks that need to be done outside of the code itself including artistic input and graphic design.

First of all, every open source project needs some quality graphics. These can include icons, buttons, tabs, graphic user interface, splash screen, and other visual effects that may comprise the program. Go to the project’s forums and see what they have planned for graphics. If they are not sure or do not have anything in mind, create and send them some basic designs and mockups to see if your work will fit into the project. If the application does not look visually appealing, less people will use it. For this reason, your skill are important to the overall project success.
