The Visual Performing Artist – Become the Nike Ad!

There is some real merit in those Nike ads that say “Just do it.” Because that is how you start in anything. You just do it. You start.

So, ever wonder what would happen to your art career if you got out of the studio?

Could you work in public in front of a crowd? What happens when you do?

Artists who step outside their comfort zone are not throwing caution to the winds. Often there are motivating circumstances. They may be at a point in their careers where nothing else has worked so why not? Or they may be smart enough to know that the old methods of becoming recognized are disappearing. Or perhaps it just sounds like a good idea.

Whatever the reason, when an artist decides to take his art skills to the streets, he transforms himself from “artist” to “performing artist” in one swoop. No matter how nervous he may be. No matter how complicated working in public may seem to be, working in the public eye, even once, changes how you view your art.

Artists who do not want to work in public or insist that they cannot, need to remember the Nike ad and “just do it.” No matter what their art may be, no matter where they are in their art careers, they will find an accepting audience!

Does this sound like you? Even if there are no motivating factors pushing you forward, did you know that your career as an artist can change direction in one day simply because someone who knew someone, happened to see you at a show or an event demonstrating in front of a crowd?

People LOVE to see an artist at work. No matter what you are demonstrating, they wish they could do the same thing. They want to be you. And if they cannot be you, they want to leave with either something you have created or at the very least, the memory of watching a real artist at work! When you create artwork to sell and people watch you create it, often that sale is based upon the experience of watching that work being created. Think about it. Whenever that collector of your work shows the piece to a friend, what do you think she will say most often? She will say “And I watched the artist paint it right there!” She bought and you sold, not just a painting or an art piece, but the experience. And all because you decided to become one with the Nike ad and “Just Do It!”
